Who was Dailis Rožlapa
Dailis Rožlapa (1932–2014) was a Latvian painter and set designer. He studied at J. Rozentāls Riga Art Secondary School and later at the Art Academy of Latvia. For many years, he worked at the Riga Film Studio as an artist-set designer and was an active innovator of Latvian set design in the 1960s. Since 1970, he was a member of the Artists' Union.
Although his work encompassed theatre and cinema, at heart, he remained a landscape painter. Over the years, his technique evolved from watercolor and oil to gouache, tempera, and mixed media, emphasizing mood and texture.
Why are his paintings specifically at Bitīte?
The answer is simple and heartfelt: Dailis Rožlapa lived right here — about a kilometer away from Café Bitīte. It was Jūrmala itself — the sea, the pine trees, the light, and the silence — that inspired him to create. Many of these impressions transformed into both known and lesser-known works, which today are gaining recognition among Latvian art lovers.
