Jānis Pliekšāns — the poet Rainis
Jānis Pliekšāns (1865–1929), known to the world by the pseudonym Rainis, was a poet, playwright, and thinker whose works are a cornerstone of Latvian literature. Together with his life partner Aspazija, one of Latvia's most prominent writers, they form one of the most legendary cultural couples in Latvia.
Rainis and Jūrmala
Jūrmala was a special place for Rainis and Aspazija. In the autumn of 1926, they bought a summer house right here in Majori, and spent their summers there, working and relaxing. It was here that Rainis created his last plays — "Love Stronger Than Death" and "The Witch of Riga" —, while Aspazija worked on her poetry collection "In the Time of Asters". In this same summer house in Majori, Rainis passed away in 1929.
Today, Rainis and Aspazija's summer house is a museum and one of Jūrmala's cultural gems — just a few steps from our cafe.
Why this inspires us
We are honored that our cafe stands on a street named after this man. Rainis wrote: "He who transforms will endure." This is a thought that also inspires us — to constantly grow, change, and become better, both in coffee and pastries, and in how we welcome each guest.
